What to Look for in a Caregiver

Choosing the right caregiver for your loved one is not an easy job. At 2nd Family, selecting senior caregivers in Maryland is a big part of what we do. People we hire to provide care for seniors are carefully chosen based on their personality, as well as a few other factors. Whether you are considering a relative as a caregiver or you are using the services of a professional company like 2nd Family, here are a few qualities you should look for in a caregiver.

A Good Listener

Being a truly good listener is an essential skill for a caregiver. There is a big difference between listening and not interrupting. A good listener is someone who can listen, understand and support a conversation. This is especially important in live-in care situations when a caregiver could be the only other person in the house. Your loved one should have someone to talk to, and not just talk, but have a meaningful conversation with. A good caregiver should make an effort to get to know the person in their care and provide emotional support besides the physical help.

Patient and Kind

Patience can’t be in short supply when you are working with people who are not at hundred percent of their health and range of motion. Certain medical conditions, such as Alzheimer’s also come with mental complications that can can make it frustrating to simply talk to a person. A good caregiver has plenty of patience and doesn’t let frustration get in the way. He or she will let your loved one do things at their own pace without feeling rushed or upset with their inability to keep up.

Experienced

If you ever had to care for someone with medical needs, even if it was just for one day, you know that it’s not as easy as it looks. One of the most frustrating parts is trying hard, yet being unable to help the person get what they need. Whether you can’t understand what they are saying or are imply unable to fulfill their request, it’s easy to get discouraged and give up. This is why it takes experience to become a good caregiver—someone who keeps their spirit up and does their best to help. Seeing a long tenure on someone’s resume also means that they are likely happy with what they do for a living, and maybe even consider it more of a calling than a job.

Sticks to the Rules

Being a caregiver also means following a set of rules and best practices. While it might seem easy from the outside, this profession is not something you can just wing or freestyle. There are some rules and regulations a caregiver should follow, from adhering to medication schedules to using safety precautions. Forgetting to administer a pill or coming to work sick are just a few ways a caregiver can endanger the person in their care as a result of not knowing or not following the rules.

Honest & Responsible

You put a lot of trust in a caregiver, so hiring an honest and responsible person is the key. An honest and responsible caregiver will never steal from or otherwise take advantage of your loved one’s medical condition. And it’s not just about theft. A good caregiver will also be responsible with and make the best use of any equipment, money or other resources you entrust them with.

As you can see, some of these skills and qualities could be learned, such as experience, while others are innate character traits. One of the most important traits you should look for in a caregiver are empathy and selflessness. Not everyone can place someone else’s interests above their own and dedicate themselves to selfless care. At 2nd Family, these are the types of caregivers we hire—caregivers who care.
