Valentine's Day Ideas for Seniors

2/3/2014

Holidays are typically difficult times for seniors. As the memories of the past collide with the realizations of the present, it’s easy to get lost in sadness of days gone by. Valentine’s Day is especially difficult for widows and widowers. Take some time this year to brighten your loved one’s Valentine’s Day. With a little time and creativity, sadness can quickly be replaced with some fun, new memories. Here are some easy ideas of how to create a special day.

1) Make Valentine’s Day cards to send to children / grandchildren / friends

Who doesn’t like to both give and receive cards? Creating some handmade Valentine’s Day cards is a cheap and fun way to spend an afternoon. Gather some scissors, glue, construction paper, markers, and let your imagination go wild. Your loved one will not only appreciate the time spent with you, but will love having a personalized memento to send to their friends and family.

2) Bake Valentine’s Day cookies

Cookies are a great idea for most holidays. Spend an hour or 2 in the kitchen mixing, baking, and wrapping cookies (and maybe eating 1 or 10 along the way). Your loved one will enjoy having an activity to participate in, and everyone wins when it’s time to eat some cookies.

3) Invite your loved one for a nice, home-cooked dinner

Everyone enjoys being invited over for dinner, especially a fancy dinner. Take the time to prepare a favorite meal or desert, sent out the finest plates and glasses, and have a fancy, home-made Valentine’s Day meal. Reminisce about Valentine’s Days of the past, while creating a fun new memory.
