Maryland Senior Care: Home Care vs. Facility Care

When we think about senior care, we often picture nursing homes, retirement communities or assisted living facilities. These are, in fact, very common choices among both seniors and their family members. However, in many cases your loved one can receive the care they need without having to move to an unfamiliar place. As a licensed Maryland senior home care provider, 2ndFamily assists many seniors with daily activities right in the home. Here are some points to ponder while considering home care vs. facility care.

The Degree of Care

The main reason why you might choose a nursing home would be for the level of care needed – nursing care! If skilled nursing is required and medical home care is not a good fit, then the nursing home, while very expensive, will meet your needs. However, home care is a great fit for those who don’t need the skilled nursing care, and in many cases is much more cost effective than assisted living. A senior who could use a hand with dishes, laundry, cleaning, or taking their medications could be more comfortable receiving in-home care. In fact, modern home care extends far beyond housekeeping and grocery shopping. All of our caregivers have CPR training, are Certified Nursing Assistants and can help your loved one with anything from personal hygiene and nutrition to organization and home safety. Seniors dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia find the one-on-one nature of home care to be especially helpful. Instead of being corralled into a room with a bunch of other seniors and “supervised” by staff members, home care allows for personal attention to be paid to your loved one.

Companionship

You are not alone in rationalizing your decision to place your loved one in a nursing home by thinking they are better in the company of other seniors. But is it what they want? Keep in mind that we all have different personalities—some of us are social butterflies with tons of friends and others have mostly relatives in their phone book. This rarely changes when we age, so confining your introverted loved one to an environment where they have to constantly interact with other people might not be the best idea. An in-home caregiver, on the other hand, can provide the level of companionship your loved one desires at a one-on-one level without exhausting or overwhelming them.

Comfort of Family

It’s a proven fact that we are most comfortable in the familiar surroundings of home, wherever that may be. Aging is hard – we lose our abilities, health, independence, and sometimes pride. Well meaning family members frequently have mom or dad move in, planning to provide the care required and quickly becoming overwhelmed. If you want to keep your loved one visibly present in your life, supplemental home care will allow you to enjoy their presence without being overwhelmed with the task of being a caregiver.

Cost

We want only the best for our loved ones, but we are not made of money and cost does play a big role in our decisions. And let’s face it, nursing homes, retirement communities and assisted living facilities can be expensive! Depending on your loved one’s needs, you could be paying for the services that aren’t required or aren’t being used. In Maryland, however, home senior care is one of the cheapest care options you can find. The reason that we are so affordable is because the caregiver doesn’t stay with your loved one full-time. At 2ndFamily, we develop a personalized schedule based on your loved one’s needs so you that you receive the care required and peace of mind for a reasonable rate.
