Does Your Loved One Need Non-Medical Care?

1/21/2016

Happy 2016 from Wink Martini! Hopefully you are enjoying the new year so far. Today, I want to talk to you about non-medical senior care—a fancy term I’ve heard in one of those TV commercials that interrupt other TV commercials. It got me puzzled at first, but then (after a martini to clear my head) I realized that it’s exactly the kind of care I wanted for my mom and pops. So in case you stumble upon this term in the future, let me help you understand what it means and whether it’s something your loved one could use.

What is Non-Medical Senior Care?

Non-medical care simply means in-home assistance with daily living. It is usually provided by trained caregivers who are nursing assistants, registered nurses or certified geriatric care professionals. Although non-medical care may include things like help with taking medications on time, its focus is not on active medical treatment. If your loved one needs someone to monitor their vitals, conduct physical therapy or administer complex treatments, they may benefit from a stay at facility equipped to provide this sort of care.

What is Included in Non-Medical Care?

Although this may differ from provider to provider, most Maryland senior home care companies offer the following types of non-medical care:

  • Light housekeeping
  • Grocery shopping
  • Cooking healthy meals
  • Organizing
  • Laundry
  • Bathing and personal hygiene
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Bill pay
  • Daily schedule reminders
  • Checkups and weather updates

What About Alzheimer’s Care?

Alzheimer’s care falls somewhere between medical and non-medical care. Because it’s a disease, it requires specialized approach and someone familiar with caring for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. On the other hand, Alzheimer’s is incurable, so outside of the medication to manage some symptoms, no active treatment is needed. Not all non-medical senior care providers offer Alzheimer’s care because it requires extra training for the staff. Be sure to talk to your Maryland senior care provider to see if they can meet your loved one’s care needs.

Who Would Benefit From Non-Medical Care?

Think of non-medical senior care as assistance with aging. As we get older, some basic things like going out to pick up a prescription or stepping into a bathtub to take a shower become difficult, and even dangerous to do. Why risk slipping on ice and breaking a hip if you could have someone else run errands for you? Having a non-medical caregiver allows many seniors to continue living at home and maintaining their independence despite the old age. If you or your loved one could use a hand with household chores here and there, then non-medical care is for you.

But time is not equally kind to all of us. Some people become ill, suffer from chronic pains or have to go through surgery, chemotherapy and other aggressive treatments. When your loved on is stable but the age and diseases are taking their toll, a non-medical caregiver can be of great help.
