Live-In Care

Providing Around-the-Clock Care

Live-in care is one of the most often asked about and most often misunderstood care options. A live-in caregiver can be a wonderful option for a senior whose care needs are increasing but who would prefer to stay at home long term, forgoing moving into an assisted living facility. It can also be a great option for someone who needs round-the-clock care for only a few weeks or months – maybe after surgery or while recovering from an illness. If you’re considering 12 or more hours of care per day, a live-in caregiver could be an excellent option at a similar price.

We know you have questions, so here’s a brief overview of how it works.

What is a live-in caregiver?

Live-in care is for families without a serious medical need who want round-the-clock care. A live-in caregiver will typically work on and off for up to 12-hours during the day. At night the caregiver will sleep, but will be present in the event that help is necessary. The caregiver will work for 3 days and then have 3 days off to rest, so it is common to be assigned 2 live-in caregivers who share the workload.

What is the difference between live-in care and 24/7 care?

A live-in caregiver will stay with your senior all day and night, but will be afforded some downtime and the opportunity to sleep during the night. If constant attention is needed and the caregiver is required to remain awake at all times, then our 24/7 care program would be a better fit. Under those circumstances, you would be provided 3 caregivers a day, each caregiver working an 8-hour shift for which they remain awake and active the entire time.

Are there any requirements for live-in care?

In order to have a live-in caregiver, we’ll ask that you cooperate with a few simple requests. First, the caregiver will expect to get a minimum of 5 hours of sleep per night. If our nurse determines that your senior needs more rigorous assistance throughout the night, we’ll ask you to consider our 24/7 care program.

Second, we do ask that you provide proper accommodations for our caregivers. That includes a separate bedroom with a bed and 3 meals per day. Our caregivers are there to work, but since they will be living there as also, we ask that you treat them well.

Why choose live-in care?

Many folks assume that, when the time comes, it’s easier, cheaper, and better for the senior to move into assisted living. While that can certainly be the case, it’s not necessarily always true. By choosing a live-in caregiver, your senior will get round-the-clock personal attention in a one-on-one setting by a trained professional. And quite often this level of care can be cheaper than facility care, with the added benefit of your senior getting to remain in the home that she loves. Unlike our hourly services, live-in care is billed daily, assuring you of the best possible “bang for your buck.”
