5 Fun Halloween Activities for Seniors

Pumpkins

With the holiday season right around the corner it is important that we keep our elderly  loved ones involved with the festivities. First up is Halloween. There are many activities right here in Carroll County that your loved ones can participate in. Whether living at home, with a family member, or in a senior care facility, there are many ways to keep our seniors involved. Here are 5 fun Halloween activities to do with your senior:

  1. Make a wreath: Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Have mom or dad help you collect leaves, small twigs or other decorations from nature. Collecting the leaves will get Mom or Dad outside, and enjoy the smell of fresh air. Most seniors are cramped inside during the colder months so this is a great way to get them outside and stretch out.
  2. Pumpkin carving: Everyone enjoys pumpkins carving. Cutting out the top and scraping out the gooey insides pumpkins carving is something that we have all done since we were little. Depending on your loved one’s abilities, you may need to help. If carving is not ideal you can have them paint and decorate the pumpkin maybe with stickers or different decorations.
  3. Movie Marathon: Nothing is better than family bonding time. Grab the popcorn and some of your favorite snacks relax and enjoy. Around this time most of the movie channels have halloween movie marathons every day leading up to the big day. Whether you enjoy the Horror or the classics this is something everyone of all ages can enjoy.
  4. Trick or treating: Everyone enjoys participating in trick or treating in one aspect or another. Helping with handing out the candy to the children so they can see all of the costumes is always a favorite. For those who live in a senior facility, there are even more fun options. Most facilities will have activities planned for the residents to do during the holidays, including holiday parties, themed dinners, and even trick or treating. If the facility does not have activities planned you could suggest maybe a hallway trick or treating or help them dress up and pass special treats out to their neighbors. This is always a great way to stay young and heart and relive fond youthful memories.
  5. Halloween crafts: There is so many options when it comes to crafts. You can get craft kits from different stores that already include all the pieces that are need. Or you can just let your loved ones go at their own pace and create their own project. Some ideas you can use are using popsicle stick to create refrigerator magnets, take construction paper and cut out different Halloween shapes and make  glue them onto thicker type of paper and make placemats.

Special treat:

To go along with all of the fun activities you could make some special spooky treats. One of my favorite treats around this time is rice crispy treat pumpkins. Everyone knows about the normal marshmallow treat but this has Halloween flair to it. Make the treats as you would normally, but when you are melting the marshmallows and butter add in some orange food coloring. After once you have all the ingredients mixed together form the treats into unperfect ball shape. Then take your favorite brown colored candy and place ontop to make it look like the steam.
